Presidents' Welcome Addresses

Almost 60 years have passed since the surgical treatment of obesity was introduced. Now the number of surgeries for obesity reaches 340,000 a year worldwide. Although the history of the surgery for obesity is relatively long, it is mostly over the last decade, that the operation has been widely practiced. This is thought to be the result of the increase in the number of patients suffering from morbid obesity and the advances in laparoscopic surgery. The consequence of morbid obesity is not only due to its seriousness but also its difficulty of treatment. The International Federation of Surgery for Obesity (IFSO) has been widely recognized for sharing the leading role to collect scientific and clinical data. IFSO, created four regional committees: the IFSO North America Chapter (ASMBS), the IFSO Latin American Chapter, the European Chapter and the Asia-Pacific Chapter (IFSO-APC), to expand its capability to play an increasingly crucial role. The IFSO-APC was established 2 years ago and convenes at an international congress every two years.

In 2011, we invite you to join us as we enjoy the winter season in Hokkaido, the most northern part and one of the most attractive areas of Japan. The convention center, Rusutsu Resort Hotel & Convention, is known for international conventions, including being used as the press center at the SUMMIT meeting. We will provide you with the most sophisticated and dedicated facilities, circumstances, environments, and meals.

Lastly, as the main theme of the congress is "Multidisciplinary Therapy ― Keys to Success of Surgical Treatment for Morbid Obesity," we would like to introduce this congress to surgeons, surgical staff, all medical personnel related to obesity treatment as well as psychiatrists, anesthesiologists, nurses, nutritionists, and exercise therapists to join our discussion.

ISAO KAWAMURA The President of IFSO-APC

Currently, bariatric surgery is becoming the most powerful and popular treatment for severe obesity worldwide. More than 300,000 surgeries are performed each year in countries outside of Japan. However, despite a 30-year history of this surgery in Japan, compared to western countries, this treatment is not well known and there have been fewer cases of bariatric surgery for severe obesity patients. Yet, as the "metabolic syndrome" becomes a social focus, the Japanese are also turning to these surgeries as a solution to severe obesity problems.

Let's find a solution together. The goal of both The Japanese Society for Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (JSSO) and The Japanese Society for Treatment of Obesity (JSTO) is to combine the knowledge of surgeons and other specialized medical professionals in order to find a more comprehensive solution.

We are pleased to announce that the IFSO-APC will be held together at Rusutsu Resort and Hotel in Rusutsu, Hokkaido in February, 2011.

It is our hope that IFSO-APC members from around the world, as well as any interested medical professionals will attend this meeting.

We look forward to lively and productive discussions.

IWAO SASAKI The President of JSSO
